India set to Implement new Regulatory Framework to oversee Online Gaming Sector

The Online Gaming Authority of India, based in Deli, has been appointed to regulate and promote India's gaming sector that includes e-sports, educational and social games.

This comes after the recent ban of real-money games in India, the ‘Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025’, due to growing concerns of problem gambling and gaming advertising targeted youths.

Online gaming involving stakes, wagers, or cash-convertible winnings will be treated as “online money games” and are prohibited, and Banks and PSPs have been directed not to facilitate payments for these games.

The new Regulator, operating under India’s Electronics and IT Ministry (MeitY), will be able to issue five-year licences for approved games and impose penalties and regulatory breaches, and will act in accordance with the ‘National Registry of Online Social Games and E-sports’ which lists all banned real-money games.

The new regulation has caused debate and even though it’s been set to combat serious issues, the ban has not come without consequences and led many international operators, such as Google and Flutter, to close operations in India.
